Poao's Story
Hi my name is Poao Westerlund and I have been a proud member for 6 years now. Before I came here to the Clubhouse I was seeking help in many areas for my mental illness. My case worker referred me to the Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse and since then my life has changed for the better. The Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse has made a positive difference in my life!
When I began with the Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse, I got the chance to learn the different Units. I got to learn different types of skills in the Facilities, Kitchen and the Clerical Unit. These skills I learned help me with my daily living.
In the Facilities, I help to sweep and mop the floors, and empty the trash. In the Kitchen, I help to cook breakfast meals such as eggs, sausage, bacon and rice. I participate and belong in the Clerical Unit. I learn how to answer telephones, give tours, use the computer, and greet our visitors.
Also at the Clubhouse I made friends and built meaningful relationships. I look forward to seeing my friends and hanging out with them. Outside of the Clubhouse I can visit and talk to my friends too.
The Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse offers so much and they support you in many ways. I got the opportunity to work in a Group Transitional Employment where I worked at Mililani Agricultural Park as a Agricultural Worker replanting flowers, plants and trees. I worked along side with 3 other members in this Group Transitional Employment and a staff was there during our shift to provide support.
After the rotation was over for me at Mililani Agricultural Park, I worked in another Group Transitional Employment with Geo Tech Solutions as a Sandbag filler. We filled sandbags which are used in front of the runoff drains throughout the island.
Now I work in a Transitional Employment Program at Waimalu Elementary School as a Classroom Cleaner. As a Classroom Cleaner I sweep and mop the floors, empty trash, close the windows, and secure the doors. I enjoy being a Classroom Cleaner! The teachers appreciate my hard work.
My success in life cannot go without recognizing the Waipahu Aloha Clubhouse. The staff and members supported me throughout my 6 years here and help me be a better person. I want to thank the Clubhouse. I also want to thank the employers who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to work.
